About

Smart analysis for smarter learning

Project Overview

CEFR.AI is a research project harnessing machine learning to transform how we understand text difficulty in ESL contexts. Traditional readability tools weren't designed with language learners in mind, missing key factors that affect comprehension. Our goal is to develop a more nuanced understanding of text difficulty to create personalized pathways for different types of ESL learners - that's what we mean by smart analysis for smarter learning.

Framework Integration

Our research is built upon two established frameworks:

  • Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)
  • Global Scale of English (GSE)

Research Focus

Text Difficulty & Comprehension

  • What linguistic features most significantly impact reading difficulty for ESL learners?
  • How can the CEFR framework be optimized to more accurately reflect ESL text complexity?
  • What metrics best predict actual reading comprehension versus perceived difficulty?

Individual Learner Factors

  • How does a learner's first language influence their reading comprehension in English?
  • What role does prior knowledge and domain expertise play in text accessibility?
  • How do different learning styles and strategies affect reading progression?

Optimizing Learning Pathways

  • Which text genres are most effective for rapid reading skill development?
  • How can text selection be optimized for vocabulary acquisition?
  • What methods can effectively adapt texts to create incremental learning steps?
